Getting the latest piercing has become all the rage lately. No longer are pierced ears reserved for ear lobes anymore. A Rook piercing is one the goes from the cartilage of the upper ear to just above the ear canal. It's hip, it's cool and it's a great way to add a little funk without doing something as drastic as piercing your lip or nose.

Visit a reputable piercing or tattoo shop. Make sure that they use disinfectant, wear gloves and either change piercing needle heads completely or soak them in a solution which kills bacteria. The hook that is used for a Rook Piercing is somewhat dense, so it will most likely not be disposable, which is fine as long as it is properly cleaned.

Explain to the person piercing your ears what you are looking for. Make sure you are on the same page. Remember, this is the time to ask questions, not after the piercing is completed.

Lay on your back on the piercing table and turn your head to the side exposing the ear you would like pierced.

Double-check to make sure they clean the piercing site well. Never be afraid to speak up. In fact it is probably a good idea to bring someone with you so that they can keep an eye on the operation as well.

Clench your fists, pinch yourself, hold your breath or do whatever you need to take the pain, as this piercing is a bit painful. The cartilage is on the thick side and the hook shaped needle they use to perform the piercing is not exactly small.

Receive the Rook piercing. This is done by the hook needle puncturing the cartilage and then being pulled through the other side by a piece of scissors. As with other piercings, your pre-selected stud is then placed in the hole.

Follow their cleaning instructions around the wound site. Be sure to keep the area clean, and go to the doctor immediately if the Rook piercing gets infected.
